About Belgian Malinois
Like all Belgian Shepherds, the Malinois is a medium-sized, hard-working dog. These dogs are very strong, territorial, and instinctively protective. This breed needs extensive socialization from an early age, and firm but not harsh training from an experienced master. They will become very uncooperative with harsh treatment. They are ever-watchful, alert and loyal, and they thrive on loving companionship, which can also make them a good pet with the proper training. The Belgian Malinois needs to be part of the family, socialized with children beginning at birth and they do not do well locked up in a kennel.
Working Dog
These dogs are all about protection. They make excellent police or guard dogs. They have lots of energy and function best with a job to do. This breed needs ample time, attention, training and companionship. Belgian Sheepdogs may instinctively display herding behavior such as chasing and circling, moving effortlessly for hours and nipping at people's heels. This is a very demanding dog, which can be difficult to control without high-level training. Belgian Malinois also do well with competitive obedience. The Malinois is bred primarily as a working dog for personal protection, detection, police work, search and rescue, and sport work. This is the breed used exclusively by the United States Secret Service.
Size
Male Malinois are about 24-26 in., while females are about 22-24 in. at the withers. Female Malinois are said to average 55-65 lb, while males are heavier at 65-75 lb. Malinois can range from stocky to slender, but are always squarely built.
Health
The lifespan of the Belgian Malinois is 10-14 years, and there are a number of health problems and disorders that are associated with the breed. This includes cataracts, epilepsy, thyroid problems, PRA, HD, and pannus.
